Advanced Ignition Diagnostics for Today’s Complex Engine Systems

Distributorless Ignition (DI) systems have reduced mechanical components within modern ignition systems — but they have significantly increased diagnostic complexity.

With fewer accessible probing points and multiple system variations now in the market, technicians must understand not only how these systems operate, but where critical switching components are located and how each design behaves under load.

There are now six distinct DI system types, each operating differently. Correct diagnosis depends on correctly identifying the system first.

At the same time, the once-essential skill of Ignition Waveform Analysis has gradually faded from mainstream workshop practice.

This course brings it back.

Why This Course Matters

Fault codes and scan data only tell part of the story.

Ignition waveform analysis provides deep insight into:

  • Combustion quality
  • Fuel mixture strength
  • Cylinder balance
  • Ignition coil integrity
  • Mechanical engine condition

All from a single spark event.

By analysing timing, burn voltage, spark duration and oscillation patterns, technicians can diagnose faults that scan tools often miss — accurately and efficiently.

This course empowers technicians to move beyond code reading and return to true diagnostic mastery.

Key topics covered:

  • The principles of ignition system
  • How to Identify – Key Features – Operation & Diagnostics of PASSIVE COIL-ON-PLUG, ACTIVE COIL-ON-PLUG – SIMPLE, ACTIVE COIL-ON-PLUG – SMART, ACTIVE COIL-ON-PLUG – MULTI-SPARK, ACTIVE COIL-ON-PLUG – ION-SENSING COIL-ON-PLUG, WASTED SPARK IGNITION SYSTEMS
  • How to capture and understand primary and secondary ignition waveforms
  • What waveforms reveal about fuel delivery, cylinder balance, and ignition coil health
  • How to correlate waveform abnormalities with real-world driveability symptoms
  • Diagnostic equipment required and how to use them

Ignition waveform analysis was once a cornerstone of engine diagnostics.

This course restores that discipline – equipping you with the knowledge and practical skills to diagnose modern ignition systems with precision and confidence.
