MAF, Boost & EGR – Understanding Diesel Load the Right Way
One of the biggest mistakes technicians make is applying petrol-engine logic to diesel diagnosis.
On petrol engines, load is linked to throttle angle and airflow.
On common‑rail diesel engines, load is based on requested torque and fuel quantity.
Airflow is controlled primarily by boost and EGR – not a throttle plate.
If you don’t understand this difference, MAF diagnosis becomes confusing fast.
The Road Load Test That Changes Everything
A proper diesel road load test records:
- MAF
- MAP/boost
- RPM
- Torque or fuel quantity
- EGR command
Under full load:
- Boost should rise
- MAF should rise
- Torque demand increases
- EGR is typically commanded off
If boost is normal but MAF is low, you may have intake restriction or an under‑reading MAF.
If boost and MAF are both low, suspect turbo control issues.
Understanding these relationships transforms diagnosis from reactive to logical.
